This article about "Using Scenario Planning to Reshape Strategy" in the MIT Sloan Management Review of 2017 is a good description of what we have been doing at the ACC-HSG for many years already. It's not about exact probabilities for best/worst case scenarios; it's also not about writing about how the future should look like (a normative approach) but to have a structured approach (mostly outside-in) to understand how changes in a larger business context are affecting the mechanisms at a lower level and finally your company's business model.

From Insights to Impact: We are here to provide you with Decision Intelligence

Switzerland / 21st March 2020: ACC-HSG adds an additional "COVID-19" Contextual Intelligence Platform Initiative to help companies from St.GallenBodenseeArea to develop scenarios about how COVID-19 will affect their industry mid- and long-term.
We are aware that many companies currently struggle with cash flow challenges and many other important problems that require the full attention of their executives. However, in a couple of days or weeks we all need to better understand how the world might look after or with a COVID-19 changing the rules of the game in many industries.

Based on our own "DECISION INTELLIGENCE" concept we will try to support you in:
  • Developing "Decision Context Maps" - what do I need to know to make better decisions about different COVID-19 challenges.
  • Sorting out what kind of changes due to COVID-19 in your industry your really need to understand to prepare for the future.
  • Gathering intelligence via our online Delphi (Expert Panel) software.
  • Identifying implications from different SCENARIOS for your functional strategies.

Your PLAN-AHEAD TEAM should help you to prepare for the next phase of Dealing with COVID-19

McKinsey has published a nice overview about how to prepare for the next few weeks, months, years and the new normal after COVID-19.
Although the article is obviously targeting large companies, there are valuable lessons learned for SMEs.
It especially highlights that companies now need to think ahead doing two things:
  • Thinking in multiple scenarios for the next couple of months and the next 1-2 years
  • Identify a overall story and direction (asap) that will guide the company to understand where it is generally heading to

In case you are interested to collect opinions about your company from different stakeholders, you can make use of the expert panel / Delphi study software of the ACC-HSG.

  • The consulting company Oliver Wyman has created an interesting scenario generator that you can get access to via the following link. However, it's primarily for the US and the scenario development of COVID-19 cases.
Nonetheless, they have also provided an interesting presentation that captures the situation (April 2020) in a comprehensive manner.
The company also offers new basic but dynamic perspectives to better understand the impact of social distancing on the spread of COVID-19 and projections about future COVID-19 developments around the world on a nice "per country" basis.

  • The bank ING has published (April 2020) a short but very concise scenario development paper about the global economic outlook that builds on a few key health drivers. It's worthwhile reading to understand the relationships between key elements of the pandemic, the management and time horizon of lock downs and the consequences for growth in different world regions.
